PRIVATE 14319 JOHN WILLIAM GOULDING 8th BATTALION WEST RIDING REGIMENT. KILLED IN ACTION 21st AUGUST 1915.

Private John William Goulding was killed during an attack on the Turkish lines, on 21st August 1915, in one of the last major attacks of the Gallipoli campaign. John had spent most of his life in his native Westmorland, however, just before the beginning of the war had moved into Ilkley. He worked as a gardener and appears to have lived with an aunt in the town. He attempted to join the 'Ilkley Pals' Company in August 1914 but was rejected because of varicose veins. Later he under went a minor operation at the Coronation Hospital for this complaint and then joined the 8th Battalion Duke of Wellingtons Regiment. In early 1915 he married Hannah Sanderson in Ilkley, however, their time together would have been brief as soon after he was shipped to the island of Imbros, off the coast of Turkey. John Goulding has no known grave and is commemorated on the Hellas Memorial and is also remembered on both the both the Ilkley and Addingham War Memorials.
