SERGEANT WHEELER T/25R02188  THOMAS HOPTON NEWTON, ARMY SERVICE CORPS. DIED 24th JUNE 1915

Before the war postman Thomas Hopton Newton lived with his wife Elizabeth at 38 Nelson Road, Ilkley. Tom had served in the Boer War as a wheelwhright in the Army Service Corps. At 41 years of age and no longer a reservist, he volunteered to join his old regiment in January 1915. Presumably, because of his previous army service he was promoted to the rank of sergeant and posted to Egypt, arriving on the 23rd March. Tom's war would be a short affair. On 9th of June 1915 he was admitted to hospital in Alexandria complaining of abdominal pains. Cirrhosis of the liver was diagnosed and Epsom Salts administered. Tom's condition had deteriorated by 19th June when enteritis was confirmed. He weakened and died at 5.30am on 24th June. His wife received a telegram on 29th June informing her of her husbands death. Tom Newton is buried in the military cemetery in Alexandria and remembered on Ilkley War Memorial
