LIEUTENANT ANTHONY GRAHAM TITLEY, 10TH BATTALION WEST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT.

LIEUTENANT ANTHONY GRAHAM TITLEY, 10TH BATTALION WEST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. KILLED IN ACTION 13TH APRIL 1917

Born in Menston in 1889 Anthony Titley came from a wealthy family of flax spinners from Leeds. Privately educated at Roscoe's School in Harrogate and then Repton, he finished his education in 1907. Rather than seeking a commission in the regular army he joined the Yorkshire Militia, eventually rising to the rank of Captain.

In 1910 Anthony resigned his commission and appears to have moved to Annan in Dumfries, Scotland where he lived off his own means.

At the outbreak of war in 1914 Anthony returned to Yorkshire where presumably because of his previous military experience was gazetted as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 4th West Yorkshire Regiment. As an instructor and machine gun officer he remained in Britain until early 1917 when he was posted to to join the 10th Battalion in France.

During the early stages of the Battle of Arras the 10th West Yorkshires were in the front line just north of the village of Monchy. On the 13th April the battalion came under heavy German Artillery fire which killed a number of men including Anthony Titley.
Today Lieutenant Anthony Graham Titley lies in Orange Trench British Military Cemetery and is remembered on the war memorials in Ilkley and Harrogate
