SERGEANT 5106 HENRY EDMUND LEYLAND 2/6th BATTALION WEST
RIDING REGIMENT. DIED 14TH DECEMBER 1916
Although, born in Pateley
Bridge in 1882, Henry Edmund Leyland, known as Harry, lived for most of his
childhood at 7 Grove Road in Menston. One of 5 children, his father, William,
moved to St Johnsville in New York State before the war. Harry had studied at
Leeds University where he was a member of the Officer Training Corps and had
qualified as a Certified Teacher. In December 1910
he married Marian Chippendale at Guiseley Parish Church but sadly, she died in
January 1912. Harry obtained a position as an art master at Ilkley National
School on Leeds Road and lived with his sister at West Cliffe in Guiseley.
Harry enlisted in the 2/6th Duke of Wellingtons Regiment, a Territorial Army training battalion, on the 8th December 1915 but remained at home until called up in March 1916.
In December 1916, and now promoted to sergeant, he was admitted to Ampthill Hospital, Bedford suffering from what was believed to be appendicitis. His condition deteriorated and on the 14th December he died from peritonitis.
Harry's body was returned to Yorkshire and was buried in the churchyard at St Oswalds Church in Guiseley. Sergeant Henry Edmund Leyland is remembered on the war memorials in Menston, Guiseley and Ilkley
